The Assam Postal Circle of the department of post on Monday released a special cover on GI tagged-Muga silk at an event at IIT Guwahati in the presence of Union minister of state for communication Devusinh Chauhan.

The special cover was released on the occasion of Banking Day which was celebrated as part of the National Postal Week and Azadika Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebrations.

“Philately is playing a very important role in Geographical Identification of different products of agriculture, food stuff, handicraft, natural goods, and manufactured Items in our country by releasing series of Special Cover across the country.

“Today the release of Special Cover on Muga Silk (GI Code: 55) was an event of utmost importance wherein this special cover will spread the popularity of the Muga Silk and the name of Assam across the nation,” said a statement.

This natural yellowish golden silk is associated with the culture of Assam and the traditional attire of Assam.

R.K.B. Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Assam Circle, T.G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, Siddhartha Devnath, Scientist-C, Patent Information Centre and C.L. Lalfakzuale, Postmaster General, Dibrugarh region were among others present at the event.

The Special Cover was handed over to the dignitaries on the dais by Indradyumna Mohanty, Superintendent of Post Offices, Guwahati Division.
