Nihar Ranjan Das quits BJP
Writing to the partyโ€™s state leadership in Guwahati, Das said he had carried out his responsibilities with dedication and helped build the partyโ€™s base in his constituency.

Guwahati: After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its nominees for the Assam Assembly polls, Dholai representative Nihar Ranjan Das decided to quit the party, bringing a sudden political shift in the Barak Valley.

Writing to the partyโ€™s state leadership in Guwahati, Das said he had carried out his responsibilities with dedication and helped build the partyโ€™s base in his constituency.

He expressed disappointment over being denied a chance to contest again, saying his efforts were overlooked. He also informed the leadership that he was stepping away from the party and wished to be released from all roles assigned to him.

The letter was shared with senior party functionaries, including the Chief Minister, the organisation in charge, and the Cachar district leadership.

His decision came after the party selected Amiya Kanti Das to contest from the Dholai reserved seat instead of him.

Associated with the BJP for many years and professionally a lawyer, Das had become an MLA through a by-election that took place after Parimal Suklabaidya moved to the Lok Sabha from Silchar in 2024.

He had won that election by defeating Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha by 9,098 votes.
