Dibrugarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded sitting MLA Prasanta Phukan from the Dibrugarh Assembly constituency for a fifth consecutive term, ending speculation over the partyโ€™s nominee for the seat.

Prasanta Phukan, a senior BJP leader and Assamโ€™s Power Minister, has remained a prominent figure in the constituency, where he enjoys considerable support among party workers and residents.

Soon after indications of his candidature emerged, party workers and supporters began celebrating in the area, reflecting confidence in his renomination.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Prasanta Phukan had won the Dibrugarh seat by a margin of 38,005 votes, defeating Congress candidate Rajkumar Nilnetra Neog.

Speaking to reporters, Prasanta Phukan thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the party leadership for reposing faith in him. He said he would continue to work towards the development of Dibrugarh, which has been projected as Assamโ€™s second capital.

The renomination is being seen as a sign of the partyโ€™s emphasis on continuity and reliance on experienced leadership in key constituencies.
