The unabated trafficking of girls from the tea garden community from Assam’s Lakhimpur district to Rajasthan as brides surfaced once again as police rescued two victims on Monday.

The two girls–one 25-year-old and the other 20-year-old from No. 3 Darkhasta village under Harmutty Police Outpost in Lakhimpur district, were allegedly taken by one Padumi Das (42) from Dhalpur eighteen days ago promising jobs in Guwahati.

But the girls were forcibly taken to Rajasthan from Guwahati by Padumi Das and were asked to marry a local person at Kushalpur village at Sawai Madhopur district in Rajasthan.

The family members of the trafficked girls contacted the police in Lakhimpur and a team from Laluk Police Station rescued them with the help of Rajasthan Police.

The accused Padumu Das has also been arrested and brought to North Lakhimpur.

It may be mentioned that young girls from the peripherals areas in the Lakhimpur district have been trafficked as brides to Rajasthan grooms for the last several years.

Traffickers, with some local agents, roam in remote areas of the district in search of girls to be taken to Rajasthan as brides.

There have been regular reports of atrocities on such trafficked girls in Rajasthan as complained by their parents.
