An FIR has been registered against a police official at Silapathar police station in Dhemaji district in connection with the suicide of a sub-inspector.
Assam police sub inspector (SI) Nipan Nath, 28, committed suicide by shooting himself with his service pistol on August 30 morning at Sisiborgaon in Dhemaji district.
Based on an FIR filed by the family members of SI Nath, Sissiborgaon police outpost officer-in-charge Padmeswar Borkataki has been booked under section 306 of the IPC for abatement to suicide.
“An FIR was registered (case no 346/19) against Padmeswar Borkataki under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC as his name was mentioned in the complaint,” said a police official.
Deceased Nath, who hailed from Rangiya in Nalbari district, joined Assam Police in 2017 and posted at the Sissiborgaon posted as sub-inspector.
The family members of Nath terming the case as ‘abatement of suicide’ lodged a complaint against Borkataki seeking an investigation into his death.
Earlier too, a section of locals of Sissiborgaon filed written complaint before Dhemaji Superintendent of Police alleging that IC Borkataki misused his power and manipulated criminal cases for his personal gain.
Dhemaji superintendent of police (SP) VV Rakesh Reddy said an investigation into the incident has been initiated and an Additional SP is carrying out the inquiry.
“Borkataki has been kept in police reserve for the sake of free and fair inquiry. A case has been registered against Borkataki in Silapathar PS and departmental action would be initiated if found guilty,”said SP Reddy at Dhemaji on Tuesday.
The SP further said that the Deputy SP (HQ) of the district has been assigned to inquire into the public allegations levelled against IC Borkataki.
Senior sub-inspector of police Mohendra Saikia, who was serving as second officer at Silapathar police station, has been posted to Sissiborgaon outpost as its new in-charge.
