GUWAHATI: A Nepali tourist, who was in Assam, touring the Northeast state, recounted a distressing incident, where she was physically assaulted by a group of locals at Mariani town in Jorhat district of Assam, allegedly because she was dressed “like a boy”.

Sharing her ordeal in a social media video, the woman described how she was forcefully pulled out of her cab by seven individuals, including a woman, who proceeded to pull her hair and tear her shirt, exposing her chest.

Despite approaching the police to file a complaint, the woman claimed she was met with mockery and indifference.

She alleged that none of the officers offered assistance, and instead, she was subjected to further humiliation.

The victim stated that she was even pressured to prove her gender.

Identifying one of the attackers as Bobby Choudhary, a professional reporter, the woman recounted how the group’s woman member suggested tearing her shirt to verify her gender.

Reflecting on the traumatic experience, she revealed contemplating suicide that night due to the extent of the harassment she endured.

Expressing her anguish and seeking justice, the woman emphasized her right to freedom and demanded accountability to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Following the widespread circulation of her post, the Assam police assured that a case had been registered, with SDPO Titabor overseeing the investigation to ensure appropriate legal action.

It now needs to be seen what action the Assam police authorities take against the ‘unprofessional’ officials, who mocked the victim, instead of assissting her.
