To curb the spread of these rumours, the Assam Police has launched an awareness drive, involving local NGOs from the three districts.

Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said: “Unique problems, needs innovative solutions: The ongoing ‘Black Man’ issue in lower Assam (Dhubri, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar) is one such unique problem. There is a mass hysteria about a man (men) dressed in black who is out to rob at night.”

He added: “This is purely fiction. No such Black Man (Men) exists in reality. But how do we convince people of 3 districts together about this? A humongous task. So, we created a plan and put it to action.”

“Engaged local influential NGOs, who held public meetings in multiple locations. Police vehicles using PA system are being utilized to convey that Blackman is nothing but a rumour. We hope, these initiatives are going help mitigate the ‘Problem’ of Blackman for good, soon,” the Assam DGP further informed.
