Police in Assam’s Guwahati reportedly resorted to lathi-charge to break a rally taken out by the AJP to protest against the unabated rise in prices of fuel and other essential commodities.

According to reports, several AJP leaders and workers including senior party leader Chittaranjan Basumatary sustained injuries in the police action.

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) launched a massive stir against high prices of fuel and essential commodities.

The AJP, on Thursday, took out a massive rally in Guwahati demanding check in unabated rise in prices of essential commodities in Assam.

Hundreds of AJP workers and supporters led by party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi marched towards the Assam Raj Bhawan in Kharguli area from Guwahati Club.

Senior AJP leaders Chittaranjan Basumatary, and Jagdip Bhuyan also participated in the rally.

The rally was stopped outside the Raj Bhawan after police set up barricades to prevent the AJP workers from entering the premises of Governor’s residence.

Later, several AJP leaders and workers were detained by the police.
