Guwahati: A swift police intervention foiled a suspected ATM card fraud attempt in Assamโs Dhubri district, with Gauripur Police apprehending one individual and seizing four ATM cards believed to be linked to the attempted financial crime, officials said on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Sajjad Ali, who was detained by police while allegedly attempting to carry out fraudulent transactions using multiple ATM cards.
Acting on vigilance inputs and routine monitoring, officers intercepted the suspect before the alleged fraud could be executed.
According to Assam Police, the operation was carried out by personnel of Dhubri Police as part of ongoing efforts to curb cyber-enabled financial crimes in the district.
During a search conducted at the time of apprehension, police recovered four ATM cards from the suspectโs possession.
Officials said the seized cards have been taken into custody for verification and forensic examination to determine their ownership and whether they were obtained through unlawful means.
โOne person was apprehended while attempting ATM card fraud. Four ATM cards were seized, and the investigation is in progress,โ police sources stated, adding that further inquiries are underway to establish the origin of the cards and the possible involvement of other individuals.
Investigators are also examining whether the accused may be linked to a wider fraud network engaged in ATM-related scams, including illegal withdrawals, misuse of stolen cards, or other forms of digital financial fraud.
Authorities said the case highlights the growing threat of cyber-enabled financial crimes and reiterated the importance of public awareness.
Assam Police has been conducting continuous campaigns urging citizens to protect their banking details, avoid sharing PINs or OTPs with anyone, and immediately report suspicious banking activity.
