Assam police constable attempts suicide in Guwahati, hospitalised

A 46-year-old police constable has been admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) after he allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming ‘poisonous substance’ here on Friday.

Police officials said the constable identified as Najrul Islam from Nagaon attempted to commit suicide by consuming ‘poisonous substance’ on Friday at city’s Dighalipukhuri area, but he was immediately rushed to the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital at Pan Bazar and subsequently shifted to the GMCH in a critical condition.

Interestingly, Islam, who is posted at the office of the Nagoan Superintendent of Police (SP), reportedly called up some Guwahati-based journalists saying that he is going to commit suicide by jumping into Dighalipukhuri.

He also reportedly asked the mediapersons to cover it live but not to inform the police.

A police official said he had tried to end his life as he was unable to repay a loan taken from a bank.
