A police constable of Assam police was arrested from Sadiya in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Monday in connection with the kidnapping of three ONGC employees.

The police constable has been identified as Basanta Buragohain, who was posted with 25th AP(ONGC) Branch in Sivasagar.

Buragohain is a resident of Chapakhowa in Sadiya in Tinsukia district.

He has not reported to duty since the three employees had gone missing on April 21.

Sadiya police arrested the police constable and have started interrogations.

“We have arrested Basanta Buragohain for his alleged involvement with Ulfa(I) group. We have taken him into our custody and started interrogating him,” said a police source.

On Friday, two out of three employees of ONGC, abducted by Ulfa(I) cadres were rescued in a joint operation by Indian Army and Assam Rifles from Mon district of Nagaland.

The rescued employees are Alakesh Saikia and Mohini Mohan Gogoi.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched counter insurgency operations and search operation to trace out the third employee Ritul Saikia.

On April 22 the Sivasagar police arrested 14 persons in connection with the abduction of the ONGC employees.

It has been suspected that at least five other Assam police personnel were involved in the abduction case.

“We are investigating the case and can’t speak much about the involvement of other police personnel in the abduction case. We will not spare anyone involved in the abduction case,” a police source said.
