The district administration of Assam’s Sivasagar district imposed prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC of 1973 against use and sale of plastics.
These include carry bags, plastic sheets, multi-layered packaging less than 50 microns; plastic cups with diameter less than 60 mm and thickness less than 50 microns; short life PVC and chlorinated plastic bags, sheets, banners, flex, bunting, flags, irrespective of thickness.

The ban is imposed on any individual including shop-keeper, vendor, whole-seller, retailer, trader, hawker or salesmen.
The order also prohibited use, sale and purchase of tobacco leaf, guthka, tobacco products and other such items throughout the district with immediate effect.

The order was issued in view of the fact that the use of plastic carry bags and other plastic items used in daily life cause short-term and long-term environmental damage and health hazards.
The aforesaid plastic items and items made of thermocol affect environment as well as lives of human beings and animals.
Plastic wastes also cause blockage of gutters, sewers and drains apart from polluting water bodies in urban areas.
The order will come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force for 60 days or until further order.
Any violation of the said order will be punishable under provisions of Section 188 IPC.
