Guwahati: A man identified as a panchayat secretary was arrested by the police in Bongaigaon, Assam for alleged bribery on Thursday.

According to sources, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, arrested Ranjit Kr Sarkar, Secretary of North Salmara Gaon Panchayat in Bongaigaon.

He was arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 on Thursday.

The complaint, filed by a contractor, alleged that Sarkar sought a bribe to process bills.

Unwilling to pay, the contractor approached the Directorate, leading to a sting operation.

A team from the Directorate laid a trap at the North Salmara Gaon Panchayat office in Srijangram, catching Sarkar red-handed after he accepted the bribe.

The tainted money was recovered and seized in the presence of independent witnesses, sources said.

A case was registered at the ACB Police Station (Case No. 74/2024) under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
