Police on Monday arrested a village panchayat official for allegedly accepting bribe from three youths in Assamโ€™s Dibrugarh district.

Panchayat official Mridupaban Chetia of Panitola Gaon panchayat was caught red handed on Monday by police while taking a bribe of Rs 500 from three youths.

Police said he took the money promising to get Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) issued.

He was caught by a team of Panitola police outpost bed by inspector-in-charge Dinanath Sonowal.

โ€œWe had received a formal complaint from the youths that the panchayat secretary had asked for a bribe of Rs 500 from them. Today, he was held while taking the bribe,โ€ said Sonowal.

Sonowal said the panchayat secretary confessed that he has asked money from them for purchase office papers.

โ€œThese types of corrupt practice are still prevalent in many places of Assam. In many government offices, some officers take bribes,โ€ said a source.

โ€œWe have detained the panchayat secretary of Panitola Gaon panchayat and are interrogating him. He confessed that he had accepted the bribe from them,โ€ said a police officer.
