The first meeting of the district-level Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) on the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections was held in the office chamber of the deputy commissioner (DC) of Chirang on Wednesday.

The meeting chaired by the DC and the District Election Officer, Chirang, Gautam Talukdar, dwelt at length on the issues relating to paid news and other “objectionable” content in the media which is against the code of conduct enforced already in the district.

Talukdar stated that the Election Commission (EC) had directed that MCMC at the district level be activated for which such a committee has been formed. “It will check all the election related content in the media and inform to the appellate authority,” he stated.

The District Election Officer also stated that the political parties, journalists and printing press owners should be given a knowhow about the dos and don’ts under EC guidelines. The meeting also resolved to hold the next meeting on March 27 next with all stakeholders. “All members of district-level MCMC, journalists and press owners of the district will be invited to the meeting,” Talukdar informed.

Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Biswajit Goswami, District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO) Gagan Narzary, reporters Abu Bakkar Siddique and Jayanta Debnath attended the meeting.
