Doomdooma: An overnight storm damaged several old Assam-type houses and other buildings in Sadiya in Assam’s Tinsukia district, uprooted trees and disrupted electricity supply across parts of the area.
The storm struck Chapakhowa and adjoining areas around 2 am on Tuesday, ripping off tin roofs, damaging residential buildings, snapping power lines and bringing down electric poles.
A worker was reportedly killed after a tree fell on a potato warehouse in the Marowapatti area of Chapakhowa.
Residents said power outages and roads blocked by fallen trees hampered efforts to reach the injured worker. As ambulances could not reach the site, local residents arranged a private vehicle to take him to hospital, where doctors reportedly declared him dead.
Vehicular movement on National Highway 115 was severely disrupted after uprooted trees blocked a stretch of nearly one kilometre, leaving commuters stranded and triggering traffic congestion.
In Tupsinga village, a family narrowly escaped after the storm ripped off tin roofs and damaged their house. The family took shelter in a neighbouring house, which was also affected. The village head later visited the area to assess the damage.
