Police on Thursday arrested a school teacher cum NRC official at Gauripur in Western Assam’s Dhubri district on charges of harassing a married woman in the name National Register of Citizens (NRC) document verification.

45-year-old Mofidul Islam, who was appointed as a NRC verification officer at Gauripur Public Library NRC Seva Kendra   at Gauripur town has been booked under the Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and for criminal intimidation.

Islam is originally serving as an Assistant Teacher of Chapgarh Amalgamated High School under Rupshi block in Dhubri district.

He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody following a complaint lodged by the victim, police said.

As per allegation levelled by the women against the accused teacher, she met him on May 17 during the hearing process at the NRC Sewa Kendra where he was  informed her about lack of document required for the verification process and took her mobile number with an assurance that he would inform her about the updates.

Since that day, accused Islam has been continuously harassing her over phone. She called Mofidul to her residence at Newghat area of Dhubri town on Thursday and had also informed police about his alleged misconduct.

Police accordingly arrested him when he came to her resident. The teacher was accused of using abusive language and having harassed her over phone for last couple of days, police said.

“A case (No 670/2018) under section 354 (A), 354,366 and 511 of IPC has been registered and started investigation into the matter. Police also record the statement of the complainant,” Kamal Shil, officer-in-charge of Dhubri Sadar police station, said.
