A two-day national seminar organized by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on the theme “Assessing the Ahom Rule” with special reference to Ahom Army General Lachit Borphukan was held at Tengakhat College in Dibrugarh district on Wednesday.
The ICHR is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education. The significance of the Ahom rule and its importance in Indian history was discussed during the seminar.
Assistant Director (Research), ICHR, Nitin Kumar introduced the theme of the seminar as well as ICHR’s vision to bring the Ahom dynasty into the mainstream textbooks of India.
Professor Umesh A Kadam during the seminar highlighted the valor of the Ahom rulers and compared the Ahom dynasty with that of the Marathas.
Professor Sristidhar Dutta spoke about the multifaceted personality of Lachit Barphukan as well as many facets of Ahom history.
Professor D Nath, Vice-Chancellor, Majuli University of Culture talked about the importance of the Battle of Saraighat in his speech.
The inaugural session was followed by several technical and academic sessions where eminent scholars working on various aspects of the Ahom history and culture presented their work.
