The Sivasagar district administration on Wednesday held a two km plogging in the eastern Assam district.

The plogging was in commemoration with the 150th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi.

The ‘Fit India plogging’ was flagged off by Lok Sabha parliamentarian Topon Kumar Gogoi.

Launching the programme, the MP paid glowing tributes to the Father of the Nation.

Gogoi appealed to all to follow the principles of Gandhi and adopt cleanliness as a day to day exercise.

The parliamentarian also urged one and all to maintain good health and stay fit.

He also asked everyone to create mass awareness against the hazards of plastic.

Speaking on the occasion Sivasagar deputy commissioner Dr M S Lakshmi Priya elaborated on the benefits of plogging in maintaining good health and hygiene.

Sivasagar superintendent of police Amitava Sinha and other officials of the district and police administration also participated in the plogging programme.

The programme was also actively participated by representatives from several social organizations, NDRF, SDRF and general public.

The participants apart from running the designated two km route also collected plastic waste and other garbage exhibiting the message of cleanliness.

Later a brief function was held at the old office of the Zilla Parishad after the plogging programme in connection with Gandhi Jayanti.

MP Topon Gogoi, deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and other dignitaries garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and offered floral tributes.

Notably, several programmes in connection with Gandhi Jayanti are also organized at various offices of the district.
