Guwahati: Internal conflicts within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) intensified on Monday after Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi hinted he might resign from the party if the Lahorighat Assembly seat is awarded to MLA Asif Nazar.

Bordoloi sent a note to Jitendra Singh, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary overseeing Assam, voicing his concerns. He also traveled to New Delhi to meet party leaders in person.

In his communication, Bordoloi referred to an alleged attack on him on April 27, 2025, in Dumdumia. He said Nagaon Police investigated the incident, arrested a notorious local criminal, Emdadul Islam, and filed a chargesheet. Bordoloi claimed that Emdadul Islam has close ties with Asif Nazar.

The MP alleged that Nazar welcomed the accused upon release. He said the MLA not only brought Emdadul to the APCC presidentโ€™s residence but also facilitated a formal felicitation by Gaurav Gogoi on January 11, 2026.

Bordoloi said he objected to the event and urged Gogoi not to endorse Nazarโ€™s association with the individual. He also stated that he had presented evidence regarding Emdadul Islamโ€™s alleged criminal background to Priyanka Gandhi, head of the partyโ€™s screening committee, opposing Nazarโ€™s renomination for Lahorighat.

He further claimed that during a Central Election Committee meeting in New Delhi on March 13, screening committee member and UP MP Imran Masood dismissed the allegations as fabricated. Bordoloi said the public remarks about him, made in front of the partyโ€™s senior leaders while he was absent, were humiliating.

He added that Gaurav Gogoi did not convey the evidence Bordoloi had earlier provided.

The MP stated he intends to submit the evidence again to the Congress high command to seek action. He emphasized that he would continue to defend his personal dignity and reputation despite opposition from the state leadership.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the situation, saying Bordoloiโ€™s possible exit was predictable. Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma said that Bordoloi could not remain in a party where those allegedly involved in harming him were publicly acknowledged by party leaders.

Sarma noted his long association with Bordoloi, praising his self-respect, and suggested that Bordoloi might leave the Congress by 2029.
