In the Northeast crime against women is highest in Assam, said a 2017 report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) published on Monday.
The annual Crime in India Report 2017 was published by NCRB after a delay of two years.
As per the data, 23082 cases of crimes against women were registered in Assam in 2017 – the highest among Northeastern states.
The other states of the region reported such cases in hundreds, not thousands.
The cases registered included murder, rape, dowry death, acid attack, kidnapping and others.
Among the Indian states, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar ranked first and second with Assam in the sixth position.
Assam is, however, the most populous of the Northeastern states — so gross numbers alone may not wholly reflect the extent of the problem.
All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the NCRB data was released.
“So finally the NCRB data is out and crimes against women is highest in Uttar Pradesh – @PMOIndias own home state. He is Member of Parliament from UP,” she tweeted.
