GUWAHATI: Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi has voiced strong criticism against state minister Ashok Singhal, accusing him of prioritizing business interests over the welfare of Assam.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi expressed serious concerns regarding Singhal’s capacity as the Guwahati Development Department (GDD) minister, particularly in addressing the ongoing issue of urban flooding.

Gogoi said that Singhal’s background as a businessman and builder renders him unsuitable for the ministerial role.
“If the state government retains Ashok Singhal as the Guwahati Development Department minister, the issue of urban flooding will never be resolved,” Gogoi said.
“Ashok Singhal is here for business, not because he loves Assam. His role as a builder compromises his effectiveness in tackling the city’s flooding problems.”

Additionally, Gogoi criticized Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita for attributing the flash floods to the actions of the citizens.
He insisted that the BJP bears responsibility for Guwahati’s urban flooding, accusing the party of failing to honor its promises to address the issue.
“The BJP is solely to blame for Guwahati’s urban floods,” Gogoi stated.
“Despite their promises to resolve the flash flood issues once in power, they have failed to deliver and have focused instead on constructing unnecessary overbridges to secure commissions.”
Gogoi also suggested that a comprehensive drainage project should have been initiated by the Assam government to effectively tackle the flooding problem.
