Sherman Ali Ahmed

A local court in Guwahati on Tuesday sent arrested Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed to two-day police custody.

The Baghbar MLA has already spent two days in the custody of Dispur police following his arrest on Saturday.

He was arrested from his official residence at Dispur for his alleged provocative statement on the killing of eight Assamese youth in Darrang district during the peak of the anti-foreigners Assam Agitation in 1983.

Sherman Ali Ahmed was produced before the Kamrup CJM’s court in Guwahati after the end of his two-day police remand.

Earlier on the day, Ahmed was taken to the state’s forensic laboratory for recording his voice sample.

The voice sample would be matched with the video statements of the MLA before media in which he allegedly termed some of the Assam agitation martyrs as killers.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday suspended Ahmed with immediate effect for “repeatedly violating” the party’s discipline.

APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, by an order, suspended Ahmed from Congress.
