Mizoram: Train movement between Assam and Mizoram has been disrupted after heavy rain damaged about 50 metres of railway track on the Katakhal–Bairabi route.
The affected portion is located between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram. The Northeast Frontier Railway said the damage occurred on Thursday evening after soil erosion caused by heavy rain.
Railway teams have been sent to the site along with the material needed to repair the track.
The disruption has affected several services, with some trains cancelled, others rescheduled and some terminating before their scheduled destinations. The Sairang–Guwahati Express has ended its journey at Bairabi and is being sent back to Sairang.
Sixteen buses have been arranged from Sairang for about 900 passengers travelling towards Aizawl who have been left stranded by the disruption.
The Silchar–Bairabi Passenger train has stopped at Jamira. Passengers travelling towards Bairabi have been provided with road transport.
The Guwahati–Sairang train has stopped at Hailakandi and will not operate between Hailakandi and Sairang. Several other trains scheduled for September 4 have also been cancelled.
Passengers affected by the disruption are being provided drinking water and light refreshments at Jamira, Bairabi and Sairang stations.
Railway helpdesks are also functioning at Guwahati, Lumding, Naharlagun, Badarpur and Sairang to provide information and assistance.
Repair teams are continuing work at the site, while officials keep watch on the situation. The damaged stretch is being cleared so that regular train services can resume.
