Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been unanimously elected as the vice-president of the Badminton Asia Council (BAC).

Sarma, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s leading poll strategist from the Northeast, is the current president of the Badminton India Association (BAI).

Last year, Sarma was elected as the BAI president during its annual general body meeting in Goa.

The BAI president received 35 votes out of a total of 40 votes polled in the election that was held on Saturday.

Sarma is also the chairperson of the Para-Badminton Committee of Badminton Asia.

The Para-Badminton Committee provides advice and recommendations to the council on the regulation and management of para-badminton.

Informing about Sarma’s election, the BAI stated on its official Twitter handle said: “BAI president @himantabiswa is elected as @Badminton_Asia Vice President, he received 35 votes from a total of 40 polled in the election that was held on Saturday. #IndiaontheRise #badminton.”

Badminton Asia is the governing body of the badminton sport in Asia under the flagship of Badminton World Federation (BWF).

It is currently represented by 43 member associations from five sub-regions across Asia.

The sport body focuses on promoting, managing and developing the sport in Asia in principles of specificity and universality.

BAI is the governing body of badminton in India formed in 1934.

Registered under the Societies Act, the body has been holding national level tournaments in India since 1936.
