Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday kicked up a row by riding a scooter sans helmets during a bike rally at Bhairabkunda in Assam’s Uldalguri district.

Minister Sarma was in Udalguri district for addressing multiple Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election rallies.

BJP MP Pallab Lochan Das, who is known as a close aid of Sarma, was also seen riding a bike without a helmet.

“Today, at Bhairabkunda in #Udalguri, I could not resist from joining young & energetic @BJP4Assam

karyakartas in a Bike Rally. Enjoyed cheering out with them in support of our party,” Himanta said in a tweet.

He also shared a video of the bike rally, where he was seen riding a blue-colored scooty with a man riding pillion without a helmet.

According to Motor Vehicles Amendment Act 2019, it was mandatory for drivers and pillion riders to wear helmets. A violation of the rule attracts a penalty of Rs 1,000.
