The hospital was recently in news for a major fire in the mother and child care unit of the hospital led to the death of a child admitted in the intensive care of the hospital in November.

The Dibrugarh district administration had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The AMCH, formerly known as Berry White Medical School, was the first medical college to open in the Northeast.

Founded in 1900 by John Berry White, the present medical college was established on November 3, 1947 and now functions as the tertiary hospital for the people of the Upper Assam districts.
