Guwahati: A devastating fire broke out in a commercial hub near Bhogdoi in Jorhat, Assam on the night of Diwali, resulting in the loss of one life.

During the incident, a man identified as Sushil Rai was killed.

He was charred to death by the flames that took place due to alleged negligence in handling fireworks, a local said.

The deceased was a native of Bihar and was employed at a business-cum-residential complex owned by Vikram Kundaliya.

The fire first occurred in a grocery store within Kundaliya’s establishment and rapidly spread to adjacent shops, ravaging the area.

Firefighters were called in immediately with at least 15 fire tenders being deployed to contain the inferno.

The flames were finally extinguished around 4 am after hours of struggle.

Although the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, preliminary investigations hint at firecrackers as a possible trigger.

Police and the fire department are currently assessing the extent of the damage.
