Police have arrested a youth and a woman in Lichubari area in upper Assam’s Jorhat district in connection with a child marriage.
Police on Thursday night arrested Suraj Baruah (26) alias Noga, a resident of Baghmoria village and Pinky Sonowal (33) of Bishnupur village under Lichubari police outpost under section 9/10 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006.
A case (no 2023/2020) has been registered against Noga Baruah, the groom and Pinky Sonowal, mother of the minor girl.
The police source said that they were tipped off by Childline officials regarding this child marriage.
Police source further said when they had gone to arrest Suraj, he had managed to give them a slip on the plea that he had to answer the call of nature.
Police had to chase him almost 10 kms and then arrested him again at Saraibahi. The girl was sent to a children’s home in Jorhat.
