Guwahati: A 54-year-old man was arrested in Moran, Dibrugarh district, on charges of attempting to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl. The accused, identified as Deepak Pandav, was apprehended after being caught in the act by the victimโ€™s mother, who subsequently alerted neighbors.

The incident occurred within the limits of the Bamunbari police outpost. According to local sources, Pandav allegedly gained entry into the victimโ€™s residence under the pretext of asking for drinking water, taking advantage of a moment when the minor was reportedly alone.

The victimโ€™s mother returned home during the attempt, and her cries for assistance drew the attention of local residents. Before being handed over to the police, the suspect was reportedly intercepted and physically assaulted by an incensed mob.

Confirming the arrest, police officials stated that Pandav is currently in custody and is being interrogated. The victimโ€™s family has since filed a formal First Information Report (FIR).

The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the locality, with community leaders and the victim’s family demanding that the case be fast-tracked. They have further sought the “strictest possible punishment” under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to ensure justice for the minor.
