A migrant worker from Assam’s Jorhat district died after a fire broke out at a godown at Madanrting in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district on the intervening night of Monday.

The body of 45-yer-old worker identified as Ramesh Bora was recovered from the godown by East Khasi Hills police.

Police said on receiving information that a fire broke out inside a godown at Madanrting Block-F, a police and fire fighting team rushed to the spot.

“When the team reached the spot, the fire had already extinguished and they found the charred body of the worker,” said a police official.

Police stated that the deceased was working as a labourer for Meera Kharkongor for last four years and was staying in the godown with the grandson of the godown owner.

The victim hailed from Tarajan area in Assam’s Jorhat district.

Locals, however , have suspects it a case of murder.

East Khasi Hills SP Claudia Lyngwa said three persons were picked up by police in connection with the incident.

“After initial interrogation, out of the three, one was arrested and the others were released,” Lyngwa said.

A case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code was registered against him.

Police have seized one small hammer, one shovel and some partially burnt firewood from the spot.
