In yet another incident of National Register of Citizens (NRC) related suicide, a 50-year-old man from Hojai on Monday allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison.
Police officials said Rahim Uddin from Kachari Gaon village in Udali area under Lanka police station in Hojai district took the extreme step fearing exclusion of his name from the NRC list.
Locals said Rahim remained mentally disturbed after having informed by NRC officials during a hearing that his name would be excluded from the NRC list as his father’s name has been mismatched in the voter list.
“On Saturday also he made a suicide bid by consuming poison but he was immediately rushed to a hospital in Hojai. He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and was brought home. On Monday he again consumed poison and died,” said a local.
On June 26, Noor Nehar Begum, a 14-year-old girl from Rawmari Chapari, under Dalgaon police station in Darrang district, also committed suicide when she failed to find her name in the final NRC draft.
According Citizen for Justice and Peace (CJP), a human rights organisation, 57 cases of suicide relating to citizenship have been reported in various police stations across the state since the start of the process of NRC back in 2016.
