Assam: Lakhimpur girl Shiva Rani Kalita wins Best Actress Award at Ottawa Indian Film Festival

Shiva Rani Kalita, a young girl from Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district has brought laurels to the state and the country by winning the Best Actress Award at the Ottawa Indian International Film Festival in Canada.

The 22-years-old girl from Baligaon village in Dhakuakhana has been honoured with the award for her role in the Assamese film ‘Bridge’, directed by Kripal Kalita.

Shiva Rani, who works in a departmental store in North Lakhimpur, was overwhelmed when contacted by this correspondent.

“It was my first work in front of camera and I am quite happy that I’ve made it in my maiden attempt,” said Shiva Rani.

She thanked her family members and friends for her success in the movie.

Sgiva Rani informed that her father took her to the paddy field to plough the land — which she performed in the movie.

“I had a dream of becoming an actress as I acted in plays and got the offer to act in Bridge when I was doing my BSc,” said Shiva Rani.

Earlier, veteran actress from Assam, Seema Biswas bagged the same award at Ottawa Indian Film Festival in 2019 for her role in ‘Idam’, a Malayalam movie.

The movie, ‘Bridge’, which has earned accolades in 28 different film festivals.

The film received Jury’s Special Mention Award in the Indian Panorama category of India International Film Festival in Goa in January this year.

The movie tells the story of the struggle of a young girl due to floods in Assam.
