Police in Assam’s Kokrajhar district have taken strong measures against violation of safety protocols in the fight against COVID-19.

Kokrajhar traffic police have imposed fines on commuters who were not wearing masks, helmet and pillion riding on two wheelers.

Rs 500 fine was imposed on people for not wearing masks in public places,

Rs 1000 fine has been imposed for driving without helmets and Rs 2000 for pillion riding.

Kokrajhar Traffic in-charge Giasuddin Ahmed said so far over Rs three lakhs were collected as penalty from the people for not wearing masks, helmets and pillion riding since June.

He said Rs 1, 95,000 were collected in June and over Rs 1,30,000 were collected as penalty in July so far.

Ahmed said despite COVID-19 cases increasing across the State few are not bothered to wear masks and follow social distancing.

He said apart from issuing fines to people, they also create awareness about the virus and the importance of wearing masks and social distancing.

Masks have been made mandatory and are among the key safety protocols in the fight against COVID-19.

Ahmed said collecting fines is not the intention.

“We want to make people realise the necessity of wearing masks and follow social distancing,” he said.
