Kaziranga National Park in Assam has introduced electronic time cards on Wednesday on a trial basis to restrict and monitor speed of vehicles to avoid hitting animals.

“We have set up 28 barricades on a 49km stretch of National Highway 37 from Panbari to Burapahar area of the park. The speed of vehicles has been restricted to 40km per hour. We will impose a fine of Rs 5,000 if anybody violates the speed limit,” said Rohini Ballav Saikia, DFO of KNP, reports The Telegraph.

“During the floods, our officials will escort the vehicles on motorcycles and have also asked the owners of roadside dhabas and restaurants not to allow parking of heavy vehicles. Motorists can contact any of our officials if they find an animal in distress,” he said.

A vehicle will take approximately 74 minutes to cross the stretch which otherwise takes nearly 45 minutes.
