Guwahati: Senior advocate Kamal Nayan Choudhury was elected president of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) on Thursday.

Choudhury, who is also the vice-president of Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), defeated his nearest rival, Mrinal Kumar Choudhury, by a margin of 347 votes.

Kamal Nayan Choudhury received 830 votes, Mrinal Kumar Choudhury secured 483 votes, and the third candidate, Krishna Kanta Mahanta, garnered 268 votes.

Advocate Girin Pegu was elected general secretary of the bar association securing a total of 606 votes. His rival Anup Jyoti Sarma and Rajiv Dev secured 577 and 399 votes respectively.

Advocate and activist Shantanu Borthakur and advocate Rupjit De were elected vice-presidents, while Anupam Sarmah, Nava Kanta Das, and Sudipta Ranjan Boruah were elected as secretaries.
