Jorhat police on Saturday arrested a junior engineer of the Inland Water Transport branch of the State Transport department after 5 years of conviction.
The junior engineer, who has been identified as Debabrata Phukan, has been arrested in connection with the case of a negotiable instrument.

“Phukan had been absconding for the last five years after being convicted in the case by the additional chief judicial magistrate of Lakhimpur district,” said police sources.
Police sources stated that Phukan, who was an accused in the case of the negotiable instrument that was on trial in the additional CJM court in Lakhimpur since 2011, was convicted in 2015 by the said court following which he was evading the court and police.
The source said Phukan, who was posted at Nimatighat in Jorhat district, was arrested as there was a warrant from the court against him.
