Assam too joined the entire nation as well as several other countries across the globe in observing the fifth International Yoga Day on Friday.

Apart from organizing numerous programmes across all the districts of the State, the fifth International Yoga Day was centrally observed at the Sarusasai Stadium in Guwahati.
With the theme ‘Yoga for healthy heart’, the programme was attended by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, several of his cabinet colleagues and top officials of the State Government.
Chief minister Sonowal joined around 10,000 other enthusiastic participants in performing several ‘asanas’ for around 50 minutes early Friday morning.

Sonowal was also given company by state education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, minister Pijush Hazarika, legal advisor to the chief minister Santanu Bharali, chief secretary Alok Kumar, director general of Assam Police Kuladhar Saikia, police commissioner Dipak Kumar, deputy commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) Biswajit Pegu and several others.
The participants of around 10,000 at the Sarusajai Stadium also included representatives from various organizations associated with yoga across the State and non-government organizations.
Swami G Ravi Shankar graced the occasion as the yoga guru.
At the very beginning of the programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech was telecast live which was witnessed by the participants.
While addressing the gathering, chief minister Sonowal said that yoga will be taken to all the panchayats for the benefits of the people of the State.
