Guwahati: Ahead of Republic Day, the Indian Armyโs elite Red Shield Gunners on Friday conducted a joint anti-sabotage mock drill at Tinsukia Railway Station, one of Assamโs most sensitive and strategically important railway installations.
The large-scale exercise aimed to enhance preparedness against potential threats posed by Anti-National Elements (ANE) targeting public utilities and critical infrastructure in Upper Assam, a region that serves as a key logistical and civilian transit corridor.
According to official sources, the drill simulated high-risk hostile scenarios within the railway station premises, including sabotage attempts, armed intrusion, civilian panic situations and casualty management.
The objective was to test real-time response capabilities, decision-making under pressure, and coordination among multiple security agencies.
Special Forces elements of the Indian Army worked in close coordination with the Assam Police, Government Railway Police (GRP) and the civil administration, ensuring an integrated response mechanism from detection to neutralisation and recovery.
Security personnel were seen securing vulnerable zones, evacuating civilians, neutralising simulated threats and restoring operational normalcy within a short time frame.
Officials said the drill was conducted to validate existing joint Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and to identify gaps requiring immediate corrective measures. Special emphasis was placed on rapid threat assessment and neutralisation, effective crowd control and passenger safety, casualty evacuation and medical response, communication and command coordination, and quick restoration of public services.
โThe exercise was designed not just to test individual agency performance, but to evaluate collective efficiency,โ a senior security official said, adding that interoperability remains the backbone of counter-sabotage preparedness.
Officials said that Tinsukia Railway Station is considered one of the most sensitive stations in Assam from a security perspective because of its strategic location, high passenger footfall, and connectivity to border-adjacent districts and key industrial zones.
They added that any disruption at the station could have far-reaching implications for civilian movement and regional logistics.
With security threats changing and public spaces remaining vulnerable, authorities said such drills are essential.
Beyond operational preparedness, the mock drill also conveyed a message of reassurance to passengers and local residents. The coordinated security response highlighted the readiness of agencies to deal with emerging threats.
โSuch exercises reinforce public confidence and underline the commitment of security forces to protect civilians and vital infrastructure,โ officials noted.
Security experts said joint drills are part of an ongoing preparedness cycle, particularly in strategically sensitive regions such as Upper Assam.
Officials said that with threats becoming increasingly asymmetric and unpredictable, anticipation, coordination, and rapid response remain key pillars of internal security.
They added that as train services resumed normal operations and the station returned to routine activity, security agencies remain alert and prepared.
