Bajali: Allegations of large-scale illegal clay mining have surfaced from the Doloigaon area in Assam’s Bajali district, where the banks of the Pahumara River are reportedly being exploited without proper authorization.
Local sources claim that multiple operators are extracting ordinary clay from the riverbed without securing mandatory environmental clearances. Despite strict norms governing minor mineral extraction, the activity is said to be continuing openly, raising serious questions about enforcement on the ground.
Residents in the area describe a worsening situation, with heavy dumpers operating throughout the day and night. According to locals, the constant movement of these vehicles has led to severe dust pollution, affecting daily life and raising health concerns for people living nearby.
Safety has also become a major issue. At night, speeding dumpers carrying heavy loads pose a significant risk to smaller vehicles and commuters, increasing the chances of road accidents along the stretch.
Despite repeated complaints from residents, authorities, including the Forest Department, have allegedly failed to take strong action against those involved. This perceived inaction has fueled public frustration and raised concerns about accountability.
Locals are now demanding immediate intervention, including regular inspections, strict monitoring, and seizure of illegally extracted materials to prevent further environmental degradation of the river.
Reacting to the situation, Hirak Joyti Das, Secretary of Hindu Parishad, condemned the ongoing activities, saying, โThis is not just about illegal mining, it is about the safety, health, and future of local communities. The lack of enforcement is deeply concerning. Authorities must act immediately to stop these activities and ensure accountability. If ignored, the damage to the environment and the regionโs ecological balance could become irreversible.โ
