In a gruesome incident, a 35-year-old man killed his wife by slashing her neck with a sharp knife inside the premises of the court of the district and sessions judge in Dibrugarh on Friday.
According to police officials, the incident took place at around 10.40 am when the court was bustling with usual activities. The accused identified as Purna Nahar Deka was sitting with his wife Rita and other family members on a bench on the courtroom verandah when suddenly an altercation broke out between them and he whipped out a knife from his trouser pocket and slashed the neck of his wife even before anyone could react.

According to eye witnessed, the victim immediately collapsed on the spot in a pool of blood. The sudden and unexpected incident caused a huge commotion in the court premises as everyone started running helter and skelter. The accused tried to run but was overpowered by the courtroom security staff with help from court-goers and lawyers.
In a statement to Dibrugarh police, the accused said his wife has an extra martial affair with other person and she planned to sell their daughter in Dimapur.
The victim was rushed to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) where the doctor declared her brought dead. Police said how he taken the knife with him is still unknown.

“Everybody in the court premises were stunned after this gruesome act .We immediately arrested the accused and brought him to Dibruarh police station and tomorrow we will forward him to court,” said a police official.
According to police, the victim Rita, 29, had in September 2017 filed a case against her husband at Naharkatia police station in Dibrugarh district accusing him of raping their 13-year-old daughter at home. The couple used to live at Longbong Ali Singa village in Jeypore area of Naharkatia along with their minor daughter and a 15-year-old son.
“The wife (victim) had a filed a case against her husband of raping his minor daughter in September 2017. He was in Dibrugarh central jail for 9 months and 5 days in connection with the incident. Recently on June 6 he was granted bail by the court. Today he had come for the hearing. His wife and her family members were also waiting outside the courtroom,” Siddheswar Borah, the officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh police station told Northeast Now.
A case has been filed at Dibrugarh Police Station against the accused under section 302/506 of the IPC. Meanwhile, lawyers of the district and sessions judge court have demanded increase in security in the entire court premises after the incident.
