The Karbi Anglong Police seized a consignment of suspected heroin during a naka checking in front of the State Bank of India (SBI) branch at Khatkhati on Saturday and arrested a drug peddler.

On a tip-off, Karbi Anglong Police conducted a naka checking in front of SBI Khatkhati on National Highway-39 under the Khatkhati police station.

During the naka checking, 135 gm of suspected heroin was recovered by the police in its first illegal drug recovery of the New Year.

“At about 5.30 pm today, an auto-rickshaw was searched on suspicion and the drugs were recovered and seized,” police said.

One passenger of the auto-rickshaw, identified as 23-year-old Mahar Ali, a resident of Etakhola under Satia police station, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

The drug peddler was carrying 135 gm of suspected heroin, packed in 10 soapboxes inside a bag, in the auto-rickshaw.

During preliminary investigation, it was found that the contraband was brought from Manipur.

The illegal drugs were seized in presence of the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Bokajan, John Das.

According to reports, illegal firearms, stolen vehicles and drugs and various other contraband goods are smuggled through Khatkhati via National Highway-36 in Karbi Anglong district.

“The stolen vehicles including dumpers and excavators are smuggled to Nagaland from various parts of the country,” sources said, adding, “Drugs and small firearms are smuggled to various parts of the country through Khatkhati via NH-36 from Manipur and Nagaland.”
