GUWAHATI: The private parts of the ‘adopted’ daughter of Guwahati-based doctor couple – Dr Sangeeta Datta and Dr Waliul Islam – were burnt with cigarettes.
This was confirmed following necessary medical tests of the victim minor girl, the Assam police informed.
Guwahati commissioner of police Diganta Barah said, “The minor girl child was kept captive at the fourth floor of Roma Enclave, the residence of the doctor couple. The 3-year-old baby girl bore injury and burnt marks on her private parts and bruises on many parts of her body. During medical examination, it was also found that the toddler’s private parts were burned with cigarettes.”
Guwahati police commissioner Diganta Barah stated that the Assam police will seek the appointment of special public prosecutor (SPP), keeping in mind the ‘worrisome’ nature of the crime.
“Not only the baby girl, the doctor couple used to physically abuse the minor boy too. He is currently being treated at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati. The police are now waiting for the final medical report,” Barah added.
“The main intention for abusing the children is yet to be known. We are continuing our investigation to find the truth,” the Guwahati police chief said.
The Guwahati police commissoner further informed that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and DGP GP Singh are closely monitoring the case.
Based on the medical reports, the doctor couple from Guwahati in Assam have been booked under POCSO act.
The Paltan Bazar police in Guwahati had registered a case against the couple and initially booked them under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to attempt to murder (307), voluntarily causing grievous hurt (325), wrongful restraint (341), and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34).
Later, section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act was also slapped against the couple, which pertains to “any person having control of the child, assaults, abandons, abuses, or willfully neglects the child.”
He added: “The doctor couple earlier claimed that they are the biological parents of the victim girl and minor boy. However, our investigation has revealed that those claims were false.”
Renowned Guwahati-based psychiatrist Dr Sangeeta Datta, who was arrested by the police on Saturday (May 06), has been sent to five-day police custody in Assam.
Dr Sangeeta Datta was sent to police custody by the court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) in Kamrup-Metro district of Assam on Sunday (May 07).
Notably, Dr Sangeeta Datta, who has been accused of physically abusing a minor girl, was arrested by the police from a house at Umsning in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya.
Moreover, husband of Dr Sangeeta Datta – Dr Waliul Islam – and their maid Laxmi Rai were also arrested in the same case.
Meanwhile, accused Dr Sangeeta Datta has reportedly made several startling revelations in connection with the case, in which she has been arrested.
Following interrogation by the police, Dr Sangeeta Datta revealed that the victim minor girl is not her child.
She claimed that the victim girl and her twin brother were “handed over” to the doctor couple in Guwahati in 2019 by a woman.
According to Assam police, Dr Datta confessed that she had earlier lied about the use of IVF treatment for the birth of the victim minor girl.
It may be mentioned here that husband of Dr Sangeeta Datta – Dr Waliul Islam – was accused of child abuse in the past as well.
In 2017, he had appeared before the Child Protection Commission in a similar case where the commission ruled against him.
Additionally, another complaint was made against Dr Waliul previously for allegedly physically and mentally torturing his former wife and their child.
Meanwhile, child rights activist from Assam – Miguel Das Queah – has said that “a thorough investigation and a strong charge-sheet will ensure that the little girl child gets justice”.
“The little child’s buttocks are burnt, vagina is burnt, all bruise and burn marks all over the body,” Queah said.
“Can you imagine what kind of monsters Dr Waliul Islam and Dr Sangeeta Dutta are? If these guys manage to escape the law, I will lose faith in everything,” he said.
“I wonder how this little soul managed to sport a smile after all that was done to her body and soul,” he added.
