Guwahati: A Guwahati-based businessman was detained by police after videos of a birthday celebration held on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu surfaced on social media, triggering criticism and prompting an investigation into alleged traffic disruption.

The businessman, identified as Gautam Baruah, allegedly organised the event on the bridge to celebrate his wife’s birthday.

Videos and photographs circulating online showed decorative arrangements, including a red carpet laid out on a section of the bridge. The incident drew criticism from social media users, with questions being raised over the use of public infrastructure for a private function.

Following the circulation of the footage, Bharalumukh Police launched an inquiry and detained Baruah.

Police have registered a case (No. 79/2026) under Sections 125, 270 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Two vehicles allegedly linked to the incident, bearing registration numbers AS 01 GH 0003 and AS 01 GK 0772, have been seized.

Investigators are examining allegations that vehicles were stopped and traffic movement disrupted to facilitate the celebration. Further investigation is underway.
