Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi greeted people on the occasion of Van Mahotsava Week starting on July 1 and continue till July 7.

Prof Mukhi said, “Van Mahotsava Week is an ideal opportunity to help our children and youth to inculcate love for trees and encourage institutions to promote the social message for safeguarding our forests”.

He also said the week should be observed in such a way to develop personal relationships between individuals and trees and celebrate the week as a festival of life.

The Governor also emphasized that forests are frontline contributors of sustenance to environmental balance which is also crucial to augment the global fight against catastrophic climate change.

On this occasion, the Governor appealed to all to develop the spirit to stop deforestation and take actions to restore dwindling forests which according to him would be the only potential answer to the menace of climate change.

The Governor further added that in order to connect the young students with plants, a sense of belonging and oneness with nature has to be developed.

The world needs more trees and healthy forests to address the growing issue of climate change and to create a habitable world for future generations.

He also appealed to all the citizens to plant more and more saplings and take adequate time to look after their upbringing.

He also observed that mere plantation without adequate steps to ensure their growth is as good as deforestation.
