Curtains came down on the two-day conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association on Tuesday in Guwahati.

Delivering his valedictory speech Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi said that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association India Region, Zone III which comprises of eight north-eastern states would become a hub for good parliamentary practices and development, to connect north-eastern India with rest of the country through a spirit of cooperative federalism.

In his speech at the Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati on Tuesday, Governor Prof Mukhi said that the Association which is the fusion of diverse languages, values, culture, creed, colours, tastes, tradition and religion would also be helpful in fostering the excellent bond amongst the Commonwealth partners.

He also said that the Association would also help in strengthening the knowledge of constitutional, legislative, economic, social and cultural traditions to help the newly elected law makers to imbibe the values of parliamentary democracy in them to serve the people better.

Expressing his gratitude to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who launched North East Chapter of Speakers’ Research Initiative on Monday, Governor Prof Mukhi said that the new unit will definitely pave the way for the holistic growth and progress of the legislative system for the entire region.

He also said that the new initiative would play crucial role in helping the law makers in law making, parliamentary debates, good and responsive governance and  respond to the ever increasing complex issues of national and international importance.

The Governor said that over the years, the institution of Commonwealth has played a crucial role in promoting mutual cooperation and consultation among the members in all spheres of human life.

He also observed that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which aims at building an informed parliamentary community always facilitates cooperation among the law makers across the Commonwealth.
