Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to withdraw all police cases filed in connection with protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination and begin the process of releasing those arrested during the demonstrations.
An official order stated that five police cases had been registered across the state by 6 pm on July 26, 2026, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals.
The decision follows a review of the circumstances surrounding the protests. The government said it had chosen to end legal proceedings while prioritising reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability and governance in the examination and higher education system.
As part of the decision, police authorities across Assam have been instructed not to initiate any further legal action against people who participated in the protests.
The government has also directed the immediate commencement of the legal process to withdraw all pending cases, irrespective of the stage of investigation or trial, in accordance with existing laws.
Authorities have additionally been asked to review all arrests and detentions made in connection with the protests and expedite the release of those currently in custody.
The order makes it clear that no fresh action will be taken against any protester in relation to the demonstrations, effectively bringing the matter to a close.
The government said the move reflects its intention to resolve issues arising from the NEET (UG) protests while focusing on long-term measures to strengthen the integrity and accountability of the examination system.
