Assam Government has decided to amend the rules for recruitment of women in the police force.
The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by the Chief Minister on Monday. Chief Secretary TY Das, Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay and other top officials of the State government were present at the meeting.
Asserting that crimes against women have seriously dented the confidence of the public, Sonowal called for stringent punishment of criminals and directed the Chief Secretary to take steps to create awareness about such crimes.
The Chief Minister also directed the Director General of Police to set up a cell to expeditiously take up all crimes against women and ensure swift investigation into all such cases.
As per norms, the Assam Police should have 30 per cent women personnel in its force, including the officers and constables. But a lot of vacancies are there in the rank of sub-inspector meant for women because of failure of the candidates in clearing physical tests.
This is the reason government has decided to amend the rules for recruitment of women in the State’s police force.
