Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the expansion of the stateโs road infrastructure programme through Asom Mala 4.0, a proposed Rs 10,000-crore initiative aimed at improving connectivity in rural areas.
Sarma said on Wednesday that the government intends to extend road connectivity across Assam and bring villages closer to the stateโs expanding economic network.
According to details shared by the chief minister, the latest phase will cover around 800 km of roads, with a focus on strengthening links in rural and relatively underserved areas.
Asom Mala 4.0 will build on the road construction and improvement work carried out under the earlier phases of the Asom Mala programme, one of the state governmentโs major infrastructure initiatives.
The new phase is expected to address last-mile connectivity by improving road links between villages and key economic, administrative and commercial centres.
Better roads are also expected to ease the movement of people and goods, improve access to markets and public services, and create more favourable conditions for economic activity in rural communities.
The initiative forms part of the Assam governmentโs broader infrastructure strategy, which places connectivity at the centre of efforts to promote investment, trade and tourism while integrating remote areas with emerging economic centres.
With an estimated investment of Rs 10,000 crore, Asom Mala 4.0 is set to become a major component of the stateโs next phase of road infrastructure development, particularly in areas that continue to face connectivity gaps.
