Guwahati: The Assam government has taken a significant step to strengthen workplace safety and ensure a secure reporting mechanism for women employees. It introduced the Sexual Harassment Electronic Box (SHe-Box) across all departments of the state admnisnitration.
The initiative aims to provide a confidential platform for women to report harassment without fear of exposure or retaliation.
Once implemented, the SHe-Box will be available in every Assam government department. Women employees can submit complaints online, track the status of their grievances, and receive structured and transparent updates through the secure system.
The Assam government has appointed Assam Civil Service officer Hemashri Hazarika, Additional Secretary in the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, as the Nodal Officer to oversee the system. She will monitor the platform, ensure proper registration of complaints, and track their resolution according to established procedures.
The SHe-Box is designed to create a safer and more supportive environment for women facing harassment at work. By allowing electronic and discreet reporting, the platform reduces common barriers, such as fear of stigma or institutional pressure.
The move aligns with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, which mandates mechanisms to prevent and redress sexual harassment in workplaces.
The SHe-Box functions as an online complaint management system, enabling direct reporting, case tracking, and institutional accountability.
Although, the central government introduced the SHe-Box earlier to streamline harassment reporting in offices, it had not yet been operational across Assamโs departments.
The stateโs decision to implement the system marks a major administrative step toward compliance with the POSH Act and stronger workplace safety norms.
Officials say the initiative will encourage more reporting of harassment cases and ensure timely redressal. They add it will foster a safer and more inclusive work environment for women employees across the state administration.
